Katherine Branton has been the Manager of the Office of Emergency Preparedness at York University since February 2007. She is responsible for all aspects of emergency planning and preparedness for both the Keele and Glendon campuses, including the completion of plans and sub plans, development of training and exercise programs, public education and awareness and is a key member of the University’s EOC during emergency situations. Prior to coming to York University, Katherine worked for the Region of Peel’s Emergency Preparedness office – PREP – with a major responsibility being training and education and public awareness. Katherine also was a civilian member of the Toronto Police Service for 15 years – 13 years as a 911 Communications Officer and 2 years in the Public Safety Unit – Emergency Management Office.
Katherine served as one of the first Canadian representatives on the IAEM University and Colleges Caucus and has just completed a 3 year term as a member of the Board of Directors of IAEM-Canada as the Treasurer and sits on the program advisory committee for the Sheridan College Emergency Management certificate program. She is a member of IAEM-Canada, the Ontario Association of Emergency Managers and DRI Canada. Katherine holds an ABCP designation through DRI International and is currently completing the process to become a Certified Business Continuity Professional. Katherine is extremely passionate about emergency management and very keen on moving the profession forward and looks forward to the day when people no longer ask “emergency management? what’s that?”
